Island Fruit Guide was founded by Tamoy Jones with a simple idea: some of the world's most remarkable fruits grow right here in Jamaica, yet many of them remain unfamiliar not only to visitors, but even to people who have lived on the island their entire lives.

Growing up surrounded by Jamaica's rich tropical environment inspired a deeper appreciation for the extraordinary variety of fruits found across the island — from internationally recognized favorites such as mango, papaya and soursop to traditional and lesser-known fruits whose names, flavors and uses risk becoming forgotten over time.

Tamoy created Island Fruit Guide to help preserve that knowledge and make it accessible to everyone.

The mission extends beyond simply identifying fruit. Island Fruit Guide aims to help travelers visiting Jamaica, Jamaicans at home and abroad, and people throughout the world discover the fruits of Jamaica and the wider Caribbean — how they look, how they taste, when they are in season, how they are traditionally enjoyed, and the cultural stories surrounding them.

The platform also explores the traditional uses and potential nutritional qualities associated with these fruits while encouraging readers to distinguish cultural traditions from established medical evidence.

At the heart of the project is a belief that Jamaica's fruits are part of the island's natural and cultural heritage. Some are common sights in markets and backyards; others are becoming increasingly unfamiliar. Documenting them helps preserve that knowledge for future generations while introducing the rest of the world to another remarkable side of Jamaica.

Technology is an important part of that mission. Through interactive fruit guides, recipes, educational resources and Fruitsy, Island Fruit Guide's AI-powered fruit companion, the platform is designed to make learning about Caribbean fruits approachable, engaging and useful.
